How to pitch to the specialist media
A Q&A with the BMJ, Lancet and Pulse journalist Emma Wilkinson
I’m happy to admit I know pretty much nothing about specialist and B2B media (I write mainly for UK national news publications), so this week I’m delighted to be able to share some insights from my conversation with someone who knows a huge amount about this: award-winning health journalist Emma Wilkinson.
In this latest Get Featured journalist Q&A, Emma is sharing how PRs can pitch to her and get featured in high-profile publications like the BMJ, The Lancet journals and Pulse. She also reveals how freelance journalists can find rewarding, well-paid work by pitching to specialist publications.
Emma is an experienced freelance journalist and vice-chair of the Medical Journalists’ Association, who specialises in health and medicine. She also does editing, podcasting and teaching, and co-runs the brilliant community Freelancing for Journalists.
Tell us about the type of work that you do:
I write news and features on medicine and health (and sometimes biosciences), mainly for specialist titles including Pulse, the BMJ, Lancet journals, Pharmaceutical Journal and Doctors.net.uk. I also do in-depth investigations occasionally. My week is usually a mix of some news shifts while also having some features on the go.
How can PRs pitch to you?
